Love Your Neighbor - Host a Welcome Wagon

You may not be the domestically inclined in the way of creating a Welcome Wagon group for the neighborhood, but you still know what its like to move in to a new home and a new neighborhood. There sits the ominous and burdened down moving van, boxes being assembly-lined out, moving pads being folded and friends are not exactly pouring in to help the new neighbors. Somewhere deep in side you a little bit of June Cleaver rises in you as your heart strings are tugged with the idea that you must “welcome the new neighbors”. Some simple tips on being a good neighborhood ambassador make welcoming the new arrivals a pleasant and memorable one.

HOST A WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBOR EVENT –

When was the last time you were the featured guest at any party? Maybe five, and then the pony stole the show. Not only is a neighborhood new resident welcome dinner, barbeque, cocktail party, etc. a good morale booster for the cul-de-sac but it also is quite the greeting for a new property investor in your neighborhood. If you invest this evening or afternoon in them chances are they will keep their yard mowed and their dog on a leash out of pure gratitude.

COME BEARING GIFTS –

Ok, so you don’t feel creative. It is perfectly ok to buy new friends so instead of baking a cheery pie why not just buy them a gift. Fill a cedar planter from the Amish with a bouquet of flowers or a real plant and tuck in a card with your contact info and an offer to help for a few hours.

GO IN THROUGH THE STOMACH –

There is still nothing that will get people’s hearts is to capture their stomach first. Old fashioned as it seems pies, cakes or even a picnic lunch will fill the hard working stomach of any mover. They will never forget the break and the energy.

CREATE A WELCOME KIT –

That same Amish cedar planter can be filled with information brochures, maps and event tickets to the local area. Have every one in the neighborhood write a list of favorite restaurants, events, hotels, attractions, etc. with a review and compile this in a notebook. Don’t forget to include an invitation to go with them to an upcoming event.

EXIT STAGE LEFT –

We are all traditionalists when it comes to welcoming new friends but what about the old ones? When your neighborhood is leaving their homes don’t forget to provide them a sack lunch, kind words, address and email exchanges, etc. this care package will be remembered as they part. Fill a basket with good breads and Amish apple butters for breakfast at their new home.
