Five Important Decorating Elements When Choosing a Rug, Carpet or Floor Covering

Rugs, carpets and floor coverings are important elements in any well appointed home. Unfortunately, these woven pieces of art are not always given the attention in preparation they deserve. When planning a well designed room you must consider that the floor is usually one-sixth of the landscape and that the floor covering can be as important as the wall colors. Just as the walls create a backdrop the rug or carpet you choose pulls the room together and provides a link to the room’s overall design.

When deciding on rugs consider things like design, size, function, texture and color.

DESIGN:

When determining the design of your floor covering consider both your décor that occupies the space as well as the humans and pets that occupy it. What activities will this room see and how often? Is your décor Mission or Modern? Mission designs will entertain organic nature themes and colors while Modern Contemporary homes like clean lines or abstract schemes. You do not have to be a decorator or an artist to pick up on colors and themes by surveying your life in the room you’re creating.

SIZE:

The size is not just about the area and dimensions that your rug will inhabit. The pattern size can affect the human perception of the size of your room. If the rug should remain quietly neutral then it should have a minimal or a non-existent pattern. In reverse, if the rug is to be a shining artwork then by all means, by a brilliant one.

To determine the size of the rug needed, as well as to help determine whether it is pleasing to you, use tape or paper and plot out the dimensions on the floor itself. Prowl around the room from all angles and determine if you like the placement and size. Do the doors clear your intended plush style? Is a table covering the best part of the pattern?

FUNCTION:

What will be the purpose of this floor covering? Are you trying to achieve insulation, color coordination or a visual impact? Rugs serve more purpose than to just have something to sweep under. For instance, light colored rugs in a small room can help to expand it, even if you really do not need a rug. A well planned rug can become a canvas to build your décor upon.

TEXTURE:

The pattern of your carpet will be more defined on different textures. Shaggy carpets will make a soft and blurry, almost smudged pattern. If the room is smaller be careful not to use too long a pile, since it makes the room feel closer. Flat texture will make the pattern pop brighter and bolder. The same color rug can give different statements when crafted in various textures. A velvety carpet says elegance and classic traditions while a Berber says informal.

COLOR:

There is nothing more important the color you choose in a rug. Neutral colors are classic and last through design changes. Cool tones soothe and expand a room. Bright makes bold statements and must be used carefully. Dark colors add depth and peacefulness to a room.

Light in the room will affect how the colors play at various times of the day. Understanding how color and light play on the human eye and emotions will help you determine your color choice.

ONE COMMONLY HELD DECORATING IDEA - YOU CAN ALMOST NEVER GO WRONG WITH A TRADITIONAL ORIENTAL DESIGNED RUG THAT HOLS ITS OWN AMONG MANY DÉCOR THEMES FOR MANY YEARS OF ENJOYMENT WITH YOUR AMISH BUILT HOME FURNISHINGS.

“A well planned rug can become a canvas to build your décor upon.” Excellent point, we all LOVE furniture (and tables!) but a good quality rug is an important starting point.
