It’s Superbowl Party Time: Is Your House Ready For Some Football? Three Themed Starter Tips

It’s 2009 Super Bowl kick-off time in Tampa, Florida. Strew beach towels over the furniture and place sunscreen bottles and sunglasses on your hardwood living room tables. Food should be Sunshine State specialties like Key Lime Pie. Recipes for tropical drinks abound and coolers filled with ice and drinks are perfect for this theme. Food items should include easy to serve seafood, such as shrimp cocktail or skewered grilled shrimp kabobs. Place food items inside new sand pails and use shovels to serve.

NON-DENOMINATIONAL FOOTBALL: A generic football theme is easy to create since you can include general items from no name teams. This can make searching for decorations as easy as the sports bin in the garage, or discarded uniforms at any thrift store. Footballs, shoulder pads, cleats, jerseys, etc. are always available as people outgrow or even damage them.

At your local hardware or carpet center indoor/outdoor carpet that looks like turf can be cut to create a football field on your hardwood dining room table. Don’t forget to include your elite custom pads for added protection. Now place your gathered footballs, whistles, etc. as center pieces.

As for the food, well, obviously the tail-gating theme is mandatory here. Grilled burgers and dogs, crock-pots of chili, chips and chests of cold drinks eaten in front of your home entertainment center say football time.

PARTISAN FOOTBALL: For the die-hard loyalist this year’s team’s can determine the theme covering your dining room table. You may not be able to attend the 2009 Super Bowl at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa but you can bring the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals battle for an NFL Championship right into your home.

While Arizona’s primary color is cardinal red it is black and gold for the Steelers. From disposable tablecloths to matching paper napkins the team colors are easily gathered from any discount mega-store. Add some of the football accessories listed above and randomly place football trading cards around the dining room or living room tables for conversation starters.

Food items for the Pittsburgh Steelers must include fare such as the Devonshire sandwich (an open-face chicken or turkey sandwich first invented in Pittsburgh by Frank Blandi in 1936 at his first restaurant, the Stratford in Oakland.), or create a facsimile of Primanti Bros. sandwich that includes French fries and slaw. Meats like kielbasa and Italian sausages are filling and memorable offerings when placed on thick Italian breads. Remember use only Heinz ketchup and serve the city’s own Iron City beer. What’s for dessert? Klondike ice cream bars and the Clark candy bar, of course. Another beloved dessert created by Pittsburgh baker, Philip J. Baur is the Tastykake.
