New Ways To Use and Decorate with Amish Tables
Amish woodworkers are famed for their stunning and highly functional hardwood tables. Tables provide an essential display or workspace in almost every room in our homes. From desk and table tops that do homework and business to kitchens and dining rooms where meals are prepared and eaten, tables may be the most important piece of furniture we own. Tables may only share one common element and that is they all provide a surface. From that one common denominator many variations occur in style, size, material, color and even use.
The Amish create variations on design and theme with various woods and stains crafted into Mission, Modern, Arts and Crafts, Rustic, Log Cabin, Adirondack, Shaker, and more. From trestle tables to gate legged there is a solid wood table for all occasions found in the fine furniture from the Amish. With a little inspiration and imagination these tables can be put to use in any area of the home or office. By thinking a bit outside the normal uses for your custom tables you can add versatility to your home décor.
Bedroom:
- Nightstands do not have to be matching nightstands made for the bedroom suite. Fun, occasional tables, tea tables, lamp stands, plant stands and other small tables make interesting choices for bedsides. A sturdy well built coffee table can be placed at the foot of the bed like a bench. It is an excellent spot for extra blankets, pillows and throws to be placed. This table can even hold books, purses or even tomorrow’s clothes.
- For a more formal look try a sofa table at the foot of the bed for displays of books, candles and photo frames.
- An over-sized table with a reading lamp placed next to a comfortable chair is still a favorite idea for early morning meditations or evening reading or writing. If your room is big enough place two chairs on each side and enjoy a breakfast in the bedroom on Sunday mornings, then later put the lamp and writing materials or books back on top.
Kitchens:
- For kitchens that do not already have a work island there is no better, more portable or cheaper options than a dining room table centered in the room. A shelf can be added below the surface for added storage.
Living rooms and Foyers:
- Use a butcher block as a living room table. This is especially impacting in a rustic theme. Nightstands can be used as end tables in living room settings
- Nightstands make amazing foyer tables in small entryways, especially if they have drawers for hiding gloves, scarves, etc.
Storage:
- For added storage and elements of interest try taking two similar coffee tables, preferably with very straight lines, and stack on top of each other to create a small shelving unit. Use the bottom as a bookcase and the top as a display table.
Office:
- If you want a real work surface skip the traditional desk and try a dining room table. Durability and large workspace makes this table a great alternative to traditional desks. There is plenty of room for multiple people to join in doing family projects or homework. For business there is plenty of room to spread out even the biggest blueprints and plans.
- Crafters love a big workspace. Try butting up two dining room tables against each other for those large scrap booking parties or seamstress projects. Place in the center of the room and there is seating and standing room for many happy artists.
Porch:
- Don’t forget that a porch with comfortable chairs is a great place to add tables. As the seasons change a table surface can be decorated with themes reflected the time of year.
