How to Choose the Right Table for Your Space

Choosing the right dining table size is essential for both comfort and functionality. Whether you're furnishing a small breakfast nook or planning for large gatherings, understanding how many people your table can seat—and how much space to allow around it—makes all the difference. This guide covers standard dining table dimensions, seating capacity from 4 to 20 guests, chair spacing, and room clearance recommendations to help you find the perfect fit for your home.

Round Table Seating Chart

36" Round

36" tables will comfortably seat 2 people.  

42" and 48" Round

42" and 48" tables will comfortably seat 2-4 people.

54" Round

54" tables will comfortably seat 5 people. 6 people can fit, but it is not recommended for daily use.

60" Round

60" tables will comfortably seat 6 people. 7 people can fit, but it is not recommended for daily use.

72" Round

72" tables will comfortably seat 8 people. 10 people may fit, but it is not recommended for daily use.

NOTE: When adding extensions to round tables, the extensions are inserted into the center of the table making the table an oval. Reference our oval seating chart for more information.


Square Table Seating Chart

36" Square

36" square tables will comfortably seat 2-4 people. With 4, the chairs may not completely push under the table top.

42" Square

42" square tables will comfortably seat 4.  

48" Square

48" square tables will comfortably seat 4.

NOTE: When adding extensions to square tables, the extensions are inserted into the center of the table making the table a rectangle. Reference our rectangular seating chart for more information.


Rectangular Table Seating Chart

60" Long

60" tables will comfortably seat up to 6 people.

72" Long

72" tables will comfortably seat 6 people. 8 people can fit, but it is dependent on table style.

84" Long

84" tables will comfortably seat 8 people.

96" Long

96" tables will comfortably seat 10 people.

NOTE: When configuring seating, you will want to conisder the style of the table. Leg and Trestle tables offer some added challenges with chair and knee clearance. See our Seating Guidelines below for more help!


Oval Table Seating Chart

60" Long

60" tables will comfortably seat up to 6 people.

72" Long

72" tables will comfortably seat 6 people. 8 people can fit, but it is dependent on table style.

84" Long

84" tables will comfortably seat 8 people.

96" Long

96" tables will comfortably seat 10 people.

NOTE: When configuring seating for more than 96" long, reference our Large extension seating capacity chart.


Seating for 14 or More with Large Extension Tables

120" long tables will comfortably seat up to 12 people.

144" Long

144" long tables will comfortably seat up to 14 people.

168" Long

168" long tables will comfortably seat up to 16 people.

192" long tables will comfortably seat up to 18 people.

216" long tables will comfortably seat up to 20 people.

Seating and Room Clearance Guidelines

Room Clearance

Amish Tables Room Clearance Guidelines
  • 36" Minimum Clearance: Allow at least 36" from the edge of the table to any wall or obstacle
  • 48" Recommended Clearance: For the most comfortable movement, 48" of clearance is ideal
  • Buffets and Hutches: Allow 36"-48" of space between the table and any buffet, hutch or sideboard.

Chair Seating Clearance

  • Allow 24" per person for comfortable seating
  • Minimum 18" per person (tight fit)
  • Leave 6-8" between chairs for elbow room
  • Note: most of our chairs are 18" wide

Table Width Matters

  • Narrow tables like a 36" or 42" wide can impede chairs from pushing all the way in especially at the ends because they will hit at the corners
